The law

Is online notarization legal in Ohio?

Yes. Ohio Senate Bill 263 created Ohio's online notarization law, which took effect in September 2019 (Ohio Revised Code §§ 147.60–147.66). Ohio online notaries must be authorized by the Ohio Secretary of State, and while the notary must be in Ohio, the signer can be located in any state.

Ohio also recognizes notarial acts properly performed by notaries commissioned in other states (Ohio Rev. Code § 147.51), so an Ohio signer can use an online notary from another state that allows remote notarization.

Every online notarization uses live two-way audio and video, government ID verification and a tamper-evident seal on the finished document.
